Swim Lessons

Swim Lessons

71% of the world is water, children are 100% curious. Drowning can happen nearly anywhere with standing water. But, as a parent or caregiver, you can’t keep your children sidelined. You need to equip them with the tools they need to be confident in and around water so they don’t lose out on the health benefits of exercise, the opportunities to bond with family and friends, and the sense of accomplishment when they learn new skills.

With our YMCA, we enrich children and adults how to properly and safely move in the water. We offer private, semi-private, and group lessons at various branches. As we are a part of the Coastal Empire, it is vital that everyone learn how to swim.

Students learn personal water safety and achieve basic swimming competency by learning two benchmark skills: swim, float, swim—sequencing front glide, roll, back float, roll, front glide, and exit—and jump, push, turn, grab. In Water Acclimation, students are taught the recommended skills for all to have around water including safe water habits, under water exploration and how to swim to safety and exit in the event of falling into a body of water. Activities, games, and drills, geared to reinforce learning, are utilized heavily as students progress in this skill-based approach to swimming.

*Students who can already front and back float on their own should take the next level up

Stamina/Stroke Intro (School Age)

Islands
6/5/23 - 7/27/23
VIEW

Ages 5-12

Students learn personal water safety and achieve basic swimming competency by learning two benchmark skills: swim, float, swim—sequencing front glide, roll, back float, roll, front glide, and exit—and jump, push, turn, grab.

In Water Stamina, students are taught the recommended skills for all to have around water including safe water habits, underwater exploration, and how to swim to safety and exit in the event of falling into a body of water. Activities, games, and drills, geared to reinforce learning, are utilized heavily as students progress in this skill-based approach to swimming. Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being, and foster a lifetime of physical activity.

In Stroke Introduction, Stroke Development and Stroke Mechanics, swimmers are introduced to the four competitive swimming strokes as well as rescue skills and healthy lifestyle habits.

Sessions are 8 classes and 2 weeks long

*If student can swim 10-15 yards of front and back crawl, please select the next level of classes.

6/5/23 - 6/30/23
VIEW

Skills to support a healthy lifestyle. Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills, build stroke technique, and are introduced to all of the competitive swim strokes. Students should already be comfortable with putting their head underwater, be able to float on their front and back, be able to swim 25 yards on their front and back unassisted and have a basic breaststroke kick. The lesson description is meant to assist parents/caregivers in placing their child in the correct class. After the first day placement will be up to the instructor, depending on the child’s performance in the class.
